On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the General Secretariat of the Islamic Union of Radio and Television extends its appreciation and pride to all journalists and media professionals who work daily to convey the truth, presenting distinguished professional models that combine accuracy, courage, and responsibility.
The General Secretariat bows in reverence to the souls of the martyrs of journalism and media who lost their lives while carrying out their mission in fields of danger. It also honors all truth-bearers who face challenges and pressures in defense of the free word, affirming that the truth can neither be silenced nor assassinated.
This occasion is not only to reaffirm press freedom as a fundamental right, but also to celebrate the media competencies that have contributed to developing media discourse and, through their professionalism and creativity, exposed the falsity of misleading narratives and strengthened public trust in responsible media.
On this occasion:
The Union commends the outstanding efforts exerted by media professionals across various fields, from investigative journalism to field reporting, and through to high-quality media production that reflects people’s issues and expresses their aspirations.
The Union affirms that targeting journalists—especially in conflict zones—constitutes a blatant violation of all international laws and conventions, and undermines the foundations of freedom of expression that the world claims to protect.
The Union stresses the need for a fair international approach to the reality of global media, based on respect for media pluralism and the rejection of double standards in addressing issues of press freedom, ensuring fairness in coverage and the right of peoples to have their voices heard globally.
The General Secretariat affirms that the protection of journalistic work is grounded in clear international legal frameworks, most notably:
✓ Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of opinion and expression.
✓ Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
✓ The provisions of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which ensure the protection of civilians, including journalists.
The General Secretariat calls for strengthening a supportive environment for free media by providing protection for journalists, encouraging innovative media initiatives, and investing in the development of media skills, in a way that enhances the presence of a free, professional, and responsible media at both local and international levels.
Please accept our highest respect and appreciation.
