Journalists Support Committee Organizes Training on International Humanitarian Law and Distributes Protective Equipment to Journalists

On June 4, 2026, the Journalists Support Committee, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), organized a specialized training workshop on International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The workshop targeted a number of journalists, media professionals, and employees of media institutions as part of efforts to enhance their legal knowledge and improve professional safety standards during field reporting.

The training covered a range of key topics related to the principles of International Humanitarian Law, the protection afforded to civilians during armed conflicts, the rights and responsibilities of journalists while carrying out their professional duties, as well as the major risks faced by media workers and ways to mitigate them in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

The organizers emphasized that journalists play a vital role in conveying facts and documenting events, which requires providing them with the necessary legal knowledge while strengthening personal safety and protection measures during field operations, particularly in areas experiencing complex security conditions.

The workshop witnessed active participation from attendees, who discussed various practical cases and challenges associated with media coverage in conflict zones. Participants also exchanged professional experiences and expertise, contributing to the development of media performance and raising awareness of the rights and obligations guaranteed under International Humanitarian Law.

At the conclusion of the activity, protective helmets and bulletproof vests (protective body armor), funded by the Dutch organization Haella, were distributed to the ten participating journalists. The initiative aimed to support personal safety measures and enhance journalists’ ability to perform their professional duties in the field with the highest possible level of protection and security.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the initiative and stressed the importance of continuing specialized training programs that combine legal awareness with professional safety enhancement, thereby contributing to the protection of journalists and enabling them to carry out their media mission with professionalism and responsibility.
