The General Secretariat of the Islamic Radio and Television Union strongly condemns the continued targeting by Israeli occupation forces of Lebanese, Palestinian, and Iranian media professionals and journalists, in a deliberate pattern of assassinations. The latest of these was the blatant attack on Al-Akhbar newspaper journalist Amal Khalil and media colleague Zeinab Faraj in southern Lebanon.
This attack constitutes a flagrant violation of press freedom and a clear breach of the laws and norms that guarantee the protection of journalists while carrying out their mission. It also falls within attempts to silence free voices and break the will of the word, in contradiction with the most basic human and professional principles.
The Union’s General Secretariat expresses its deep sorrow and mourns the martyr journalist Amal Khalil of Al-Akhbar, who was killed while performing her professional duty. It extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, to the Al-Akhbar newspaper family, and to the Lebanese media community.
It also wishes a speedy recovery to media colleague Zeinab Faraj, who was injured while carrying out her professional duty, affirming its full solidarity with all media professionals who face risks in the pursuit of truth.
The General Secretariat calls on the international community, human rights and journalistic organizations, and the competent judicial authorities to assume their responsibilities in following up on these crimes and assassinations and to work to ensure that the perpetrators do not escape accountability.
The General Secretariat of the Islamic Radio and Television Union reiterates the necessity of protecting media professionals and calls for safeguarding press freedom as a fundamental pillar in conveying the truth and exposing violations.
Please accept our highest respect and appreciation.
