The Islamic Radio and Television Union vehemently condemns the crime committed by the “Israeli” occupation forces through the direct targeting of the media crew of the Al-Jazeera Channel in the hostile strike they carried out last night against a media camp set in front of the main gate of the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The strike left all journalists: Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal martyred.
This war crime that targeted journalists who were inside a tent that is set for media work, reemphasizes that the “Israeli” entity doesn’t differentiate in its attacks between a civilian or a military target, and doesn’t even consider the international laws, has no redlines, and instead violated all sanctities without any deterrent, which include the targeting of journalists and media outlets, in a grave violation of international norms and conventions.
The IRTVU reminds that the International Humanitarian Law, namely Article 79 of the first auxiliary protocol of the Geneva Agreements, clearly provides protecting journalists and considering them civilian individuals who must be respected and unharmed, and underlines the necessity of providing them with a safe environment for their work, in addition to holding accountable those who attack them.
As the IRTVU extends the warmest condolences to the families of the five martyrs, and the Al-Jazeera Satellite Channel’s administration and team, it underlines its solidarity with them in this calamity, and full support for their full right to pursue their free media mission despite all challenges and attacks.
The targeting of the Al-Jazeera crew as they were inside a media tent is neither an accidental nor a marginal event, but rather a new episode in a systematic series to hide the truth and silence the free voice, this poses the international community in the face of its legal and ethical responsibility to urgently act via international and rights organizations to end such relentless violations and force the occupation to respect the international conventions and stop targeting journalists and media outlets.
Kindly do accept the utmost respect and appreciation
